Protecting progress in the time of COVID-19

IGN and its partners believe in a world where people have access to nutritious food, including the iodine in their diet that allows children to reach their full cognitive potential. The profound health and economic impacts of COVID-19 will make that vision more difficult to attain, but even more important to achieve. IGN and its partners are working to protect the progress we’ve made in ensuring that salt is iodized to prevent iodine deficiency disorders, and to find a way forward from here.

There are a lot of things to think about: assuring procurement and supply of iodine to fortify salt; mitigating rising prices caused by stops or slowdowns in production; ensuring that the salt that countries are importing is adequately iodized, and positioning iodized salt production as an essential economic and public health activity. Over the next few months, this blog will share examples of how countries and stakeholders are doing just that.

Meet Dr. Gregory Gerasimov, IGN regional coordinator for Eastern Europe and Central Asia

IGN’s Dr. Gregory Gerasimov’s enduring commitment to eliminating iodine deficiency disorders began with the collapse of salt iodization programs caused by the break-up of the USSR in the 1990s. He believes COVID-19 will bring new challenges in terms of monitoring population iodine status, but that IGN is working on new ways to meet them.

FAO's SOFI report and The Lancet highlight challenges of COVID-19

This month, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization released its 2020 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World. The report’s major focus was on the need to transform food systems for affordable and healthy diets – a challenge exacerbated in the COVID-19 environment. It says a preliminary assessment suggests the pandemic may add between 83 and 132 million people to the total number of undernourished in the world in 2020.
